NevisNevis is one of the most unspoilt islands in the Caribbean. It forms part of the inner arc of the Leeward Islands and sits two miles from St. Kitts and 50 miles west of Antigua. It’s a very special place known for its charm and the easy-going friendliness of its people.
The island of Nevis has always been a place where ecology is considered important. Vividly green with blue skies, clean air and long empty beaches, Nevis has a pace of life that encourages you to stop and appreciate all the natural beauty around you. British settlers arrived in Nevis in 1628 and the island first made its mark as a major sugar producer, an industry that has long since gone. Today it is an intimate and relaxed tourist destination with a small number of beach-front and hillside hotels, ranging from a modern spa resort to historic sugar plantations-turned-hotels and beach-side cottages. ClimateNevis is located about 17 degrees north of the Equator - 17.10 N, 62.35 W to be precise. Thanks to its wonderful spot on the globe, it enjoys a tropical climate that is tempered all year round by constant sea breezes. In December you can expect 83°F (28°C) and a low chance of rain!
CurrencySt. Kitts and Nevis local currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (ECD or XCD) and is pegged to the US Dollar. The exchange rate is $2.6882 ECD for $1.00 USD, and credit cards are widely accepted.
ElectricityThe electricity on the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis is 110 volt, with American sockets, provided by Nevlec. Power outages can happen, which is why Oualie Beach Resort has its own backup generator to keep the power running.
Many residents have already been using solar panels to heat their water and cisterns to collect rainwater for decades. In a recent effort to preserve the environment of St. Kitts and Nevis, wind turbines and solar panels were installed to reduce the usage of diesel. So far wind turbines represent 3% of the total electricity produced for both islands, and solar panels represent 2%. CommunicationBoth islands offer a 4G internet connection for cell phones almost everywhere. International travelers should be able to make local calls depending on their cell phone subscription plan. Otherwise, local SIM cards can be purchased to make calls.
